First Sentence: Even though it was barely eight o'clock and the sun had just come up, practically the whole town of Eagle had turned out to see the pack train off.

Last Sentence: We went on that way until we came in sight of the settlement, then we let each other go.

This was a lovely memoir of the author's first year teaching school in the Alaskan wilderness in the year, 1927. Anne was just 19 years old when she took off for the wilds of Alaska, not having a clue what was in store for her. Harsh weather, bigoted and stubborn locals, hopeless Eskimo Indians, a one room school house with children spanning many different ages, and love for a gentle half-breed and two little half-breed children. Anne grows up gracefully, during this year, and all I know is that I definitely don't have a pioneering spirit like her!

  1. I'll bet you're more adventurous than you give yourself credit for. Have you finished the NFF Challenge now?
