First Sentence: "When was it that first I heard of the grass harp?"

Last Sentence: "We listened."
I have read only one other story by Truman Capote, The Christmas Story, so I feel like he is a new author for me. The Grass Harp was a sweet and beautifully written story of 3 misfits looking for the definition of love and of a life well lived--a life lived of making choices. As different characters enter the story, each of the 3 main characters learn a little more about themselves and of life. I read that Truman Capote wrote this when he was only 25, a fact I find amazing. What insight into human nature he had and what a lyrical prose style he possessed.
The theme of this book is summed up with this one quote: "that love is a chain of love, as nature is a chain of life."
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a beautifully written story, set in the south.
My edition of this book includes other stories by Capote and I hope to get back to them sometime this summer.
I've never read a book by Truman Capote, and have never had the desire. But your review makes me rethink why I had avoided him...
ReplyDeleteI love the way you do first and last sentence. It gives one a chance to make up their own story before reading the book.
ReplyDeleteI've read In Cold Blood and just loved his style. Maybe, one day, I'll get to read this. :)
